The Polar FT60 is a good heart rate monitor that is available in three slightly different designs: purple (for women), black with decorations (for women), and a black model for men. They all look really good and modern and will want you to wear your Polar FT60 also during the day. Just be warned that the purple model is quite a deep fuchsia color. I guess the black one with the decorations might be the best choice for women – not too bright and colorful. But everybody has their own choice.
Great Features Of The Polar FT60
The Polar FT60 has definitely more features than the Polar FT7, which makes it a good intermediate running watch model. The heart rate features include the average and maximum HR, age based HR, shows the actual heart rate while you are training in % of max. HR or in beats per minute. You can set your own target heart rate and train accordingly and the Polar FT60 will tell you audibly or visually if you are out of your zone. This is quite neat as you don’t need to constantly check at where you are right now. The watch let’s you see this data on an easy to understand graph. These are functions that Polar developed especially for their own watches which include a Polar Fitness Test. While at rest your Polar FT60 measures your aerobic fitness level within 5 minutes. It takes the data of your heart rate, your personal data you put into your monitor and the HR while you are resting. The test should guide you what your maximum oxygen intake is and how you can effectively advance with your training. The Polar FT60 also includes an excellent Calorie Counter, again a concept that is straight from Polar themselves. It not only shows you the calories that you burned during your running session but also adds them together into a log file. What sets this feature apart from other running watches is that you get also data about how much fat is actually burned. It is displayed by % of fat of all calories burned during your workout. Another neat feature of the Polar FT60 is Polar OwnZone which calculates in each training session on how far you should push your body. It calculates this zone from your actual well-being in that moment. So if you over trained the previous day or are tired, this will all be taken in consideration and your Polar FT60 will guide you by telling you your heart rate limits for that particular training session. The Star Training Program sets you weekly targets to loose weight or improve your fitness level. Your Polar FT60 will tell you how intense and how long you need to workout to reach these weekly goals. This is very effective and especially motivating.
What Else Can You Expect From Your Polar FT60
You can pair your watch with an optional GPS receiver and get accurate distance and pace measurements. At the time of writing this review, the G1 GPS sensor costs around $ 110.00 USD. I think this is quite a neat feature, but I am not sure that this is the perfect solution. If you are interested in tracking also your distance and speed during your run, then it is better to buy a GPS running watch. For example the Garmin Forerunner 305 is only a few dollars more than the Polar FT60. You can read an in-depth review about the Garmin Forerunner 305 on our site. Another useful feature of the Polar FT60 is that you can replace the batteries, on the heart strap and on the watch, yourself. So you don’t need to ship in your watch to your local Polar dealer. The watch also stores your totals, weekly history and 100 workout files including all their data. But besides these heart rate monitor features your Polar FT60 is also an excellent watch with calendar, back-light, dual time zone, alarm and key lock. The watch is water-resistant up to 100 feet (30 meters).
